AAA London Group is inviting you for an exploration of one of Italian's most beautiful lakes called Garda and its area. Having been to investigate (as we always do before bringing our guests) in the area in October 2017, I fell in love with its beauty. Most of the photos below are from my trip there.
We have also run a 1st successful Oct.3-7 trip in 2018, here are photos and reviews.
The end of September is the best time to visit this stunning part of Italy for hiking, it is not terribly hot like in summer - around +19/22 but the lake water is still warm enough to swim - around 19-21 C.
You'd expect to have warm days but it becomes cooler during the clear nights.
We plan to have 2 full days of hiking and one-day sightseeing & exploring the lake by boat.
You can actually make it a very relaxing holiday for yourself if you wish so.
Our hotel is located in a pretty town with plenty of shops, castle, boat pier and an easy walking path along the lake.
Lake Garda, is the largest in Italy, with a surface of 370 square km and 160 km of circumference. It reaches its maximum depth of 365 meters in front of the Island of Trimelone, in the town of Brenzone, 5 km south of Malcesine.
The lake is inhabited by more than 30 species of fishes.
Garda is surrounded by a series of mountains and hills that create a spectacular natural scenery. Thanks to its geographical position, which makes it the most southern of the pre-alpine lakes, its shores are characterized by an exceptionally mild climate that favours the growth of a predominately Mediterranean vegetation such as palm trees, oleanders, lemon and olive trees.
A very interesting view of the lake can be seen from the lake itself, thanks to a very efficient connection of boats, over crafts and ferry boats.
Among the five islands of the lake, the “Isola del Sogno” or Dream Island is only 20 meters from the Sogno Peninsula which can be reached walking during the drought periods. The “Isola degli Olivi” or Olive trees Island, also known as the Love Island, is right in front of our private dock, about 300 meters away from the shore. The Island of Trimelone cannot be visited because during World War II it was used as a gunpowder storage area and even though it has been reclaimed several times, numerous ammunition remnants are still left around the island.
Our hotel is situated in Malcesine (http://www.citalia.com/holidays/italy/lake-garda/malcesine/#). It is one of Lake Garda’s most beautiful towns, climbing the hillside towards a majestic castle.
The ancient harbour forms a bustling base to the town, with pretty boats bobbing on the water and a string of restaurants overlooking them. Behind this, atmospheric cobbled streets wind upwards, separated by several piazzas with pretty terracotta houses and upmarket boutiques. Above these stands the town’s enormous 13th-century castle, which offers impressive views from the top of the mighty keep tower.
The town is particularly popular with walkers, thanks to the dramatic Mount Baldo which makes even the town’s huge castle seem small. Those with a head for heights can take the two modern cable cars right to the top – the views from over 7,000 feet up are truly breathtaking and some of the best in the region.
Walking is a simple and natural movement; walking in the mountains, in close contact with nature is the best you can have for both your body and mind.
Needless to say that, from the shores up to the summit of Mount Baldo (http://360gardalife.com/en/monte-baldo) the highest being the peak at Valdritta - 2218m, Lake Garda (http://360gardalife.com/en/lake-garda) offers an infinite variety of itinerary and paths of different length but suitable for all kind of need and level of fitness.
There’s a cable car leading you from Malcesine to Tratto Spino on the top of Mount Baldo. The Malcesine Monte Baldo cable car (http://360gardalife.com/en/cable-car-malcesine-monte-baldo) is open 10 months a year while it is closed for maintenance before and at the end of summer.
There are short walks and paths with different places to stop and have a break not far from the cable car station where you can relax far away from your daily routine.
For sporty walkers, on the other hand, many other routes are available, and some of them are quite challenging.
There will be two experienced hike leaders on this trip if we need we may split a group into two smaller groups so members can choose a hike according to their fitness and abilities!
You may also avoid hiking at all, relax and enjoy sightseeing only :).
We will be based in 3 *** Club Hotel Olivi (http://www.clubhotelolivi.it/en/) in Malcesine town. Far away from the hectic world, nestled at the foot of Monte Baldo majestic mountains, at the shore of the mystical Lake Garda (http://www.clubhotelolivi.it/lake-garda/?lang=en), lays our resort Club Hotel Olivi, a true hideaway, enclosed in a park of 30,000 sqm in the “Valley of Dreams” – Val di Sogno.
